FROM THE MAILBAG
Dear Phil,
Enjoying reading the football stuff on your website and listening
to you on
ABC TV covering the VFL when at home.
I wanted to ask for you thoughts and opinion on something if you
don't mind
responding.
Are both the VFL and VAFA effective breeding grounds for playiers
that may
fall through the Tac Cup representative system or muture aged recruits
looking to make an impression at the highest level of football ?
Hope you can help.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Ben Carbonaro
Dear Mr Cleary,
I am interested in learning a bit about Jack Aziz's career in the
VFA. I was only a youngster when he was dominating for Seagulls
and then the Tigers. What sort of influece was he in the league
and in the teams he played for? Was he a feared player in the comp
and did he ever have a stint in the VFL?
Look forward to hearing from you soon
Regards Hus.
G'day,
Jack was great Hus. Sometimes misunderstood but didn't take any
nonsense from other players and was a genuinely great bloke. Sides
certainly worried about him. In the last quarter of the 1990 grand
final he kicked a remarkable goal that set the dogs barking and
enabled Willi to win an unwinnable game.
.....
I'd just like to thank you and Dean for all your hard work in maintaining
Coburg at City Oval. I don't know what we'd do on weekends if there
wasn't any Coburg to follow. (9 year old son just loves going to
VFL footy - and so do I!).
I sure hope that the alliance is not merely until Richmond
are in a better fincancial position. Is it just for 1 year, or more?
Thanks,
Bernie.

Hi Phil,
I hope you enjoy the 2 old VFA Coburg team photos from the 50s.
I got about 10 from other clubs incuding Moorabbin and Brighton.
I bought them from ebay. There is a bit of old VFA memoribilia floating
around. I went to Gardenvale Collectibiles and got an old Caulfield
1975 Annual report plus a Moorabbin Kangaroos membership medallion.
......I will be at Frankston this Saturday for the Frankston v Williamstown
match. Frankston were fantastic in the first three quarters in the
match v Port Melbourne. They played a great style of footy were
they tackle hard play fast direct footy and run straight, unlike
my AFL team Richmond who zig zag all over the place. In the Williamstown
v Coburg match the wind was amazing. David Rodan led Coburg to a
gutsy win.
......am always on the lookout for any old games from the 70s and
80s. I wish we can turn back time and that ATV 0 never destroyed
and kept a lot of the old matches. It's a crying shame as video
recorders were very rare back then. Imagine watching some of the
tribal matches like you described on your website Preston v Coburg
with 10,000 people there, or a bruising game at Dandenong, Port
Melbourne or Oakleigh. How about some of those second division matches
that were televised on a Saturday.
Phil do you have any games featuring Brunswick? Speaking of Brunswick,
I bought the Club history which was a great buy. Are they having
a team of the Century this year ? Keith Greig, Wayne Schimmelbusch
are some of the champions that started their careers at Gillon Oval.
I'll catch you at Frankston on Saturday
Cheers from
George Paras
