A ROOM WITH A VIEW

It won't be long before the wrecker's hammer turns the old Members Stand at the MCG into a pile of rubble. In the mansions of Toorak and in the stately homes of our western district aristocracy there won't be a dry eye for weeks. But just to show how much we ordinary people of Melbourne care we've decide to give the old girl a send off.

WHEN - Wednesday 17 September

Yes, on the Coburg Football Club will host the VFL grand final luncheon and press conference in the Long Room at the MCG. We thought it was the least we could do to show our respect for those pastoralist squatters, bankers, financiers, Tory politicians, lawyers and doctors who've given so much to football and this great city of ours. Where would the average kid from the northern and western suburbs be without the generosity of those people who've sat in the Members Stand and cheered Melbourne to victory over the years? I've even invited the colt from Kooyong, former Liberal Party leader, Andrew Peacock, so we can jointly toast the Queen at the end of the luncheon.

Along with Peacock, former PM and Coburg supporter Bob Hawke, and Prime Minister John Howard have been invited to what will be a great lead in to the VFL grand final at Optus Oval on the following Sunday. I'll be the MC and we're hoping to have former VFA legend Fred Cook and a stream of guests in the Long Room.

WHERE TO NOW?

North Ballarat has nailed its colours to the mast and declared it will stand-alone. It's a bold move. So while the Roosters argue for more home games and number of reforms already flagged by me during the year - e.g. increasing the finals eligibility threshold of AFL players - Coburg and the Bullants continue their negotiations with AFL partners Richmond and Carlton.

It's no secret that Richmond CEO Ian Campbell wants to explore the possibility of reviving Punt Road as a venue. It's Richmond's prerogative. But would playing on a small ground such as Punt Road enhance the quality of Richmond's game, prepare it for big matches at the MCG and increase patronage? I don't think so. Anyway, the Coburg Board has already offered to play a one 'revival' game a year at Punt Road. I'll keep you posted.
