Reds in Nth Coburg in October

The main game - scoring

The U12 senior team played St Francis De Salles in a replay of our semi-final loss of last year with the boys determined to atone for that disappointment. We won the toss and bowled with immediate success to Sam Ward (1/1) and then Ruairi Cleary (3/3) and Curtis Hamid (2/1) ripped the opposition apart seeing them tumble from 1 for 8 to 6 for 12 in four overs.

Reds in action against St Frances De Salles.

With Kaisel Sarson-Lawrence taking 2/10 and single wickets to Carlo Manley and Jack Dinale we dismissed StFrancis for a low 50 runs of 23 overs. Some great fielding and wicketkeeping supported our bowlers with Carlo's 2 catches and 1 stumping and Kaiseal's 2 catches the highlights of a terrific effort in the field. A slashing 24 by Fergus Reilly (4 x 4's, 1 x 6) saw us pass the score after just 11 overs with fine knocks by Curtis (17 no) , Ruairi (9 no) and the "new boy" Tom Casey (6 no).

The coach talks to his players - gently and with care.

Everyone in the team did their bit and we finished very comfortable winners with a total of 5/112. The continued improvement and consistency of performance is very pleasing so early on in the year.

MATCH REPORTS

Firsts: Monash Gryphons 5-cc-189 d Reds 107

With Monash winning the toss and batting first, the day began well with some tight bowling keeping the runs down. Kieran and Troy struck to remove the openers cheaply, but sensible batting by the Gryphons (possibly the first time that phrase has ever appeared in print) ensured they kept wickets in hand. Sanyog and Troy bowled fantastic spells, while Kieran and Brett also kept the pressure on. Both spinners found the going tough with a sticky ball, but after 35 overs, the total was just 109. Ninety runs flowed from the last ten though, as some good hitting ensured we'd be chasing a sizeable score. Unfortunately, Bruce was run out (it looked a poor decision from the boundary at deep fine leg) in the second over, and Troy fell victim to the slick legside glovework of the Monash 'keeper. When Kieran departed shortly after, the chase looked decidedly sick at 3/9. Macca set about a rescue mission (with good support from the returning Steve Davies), and smashed his way to 50 - keeping the dream alive. Caught on the boundary for 47, Sourav's good fortune shone through as the fielder fell over the line, carrying the ball with him for six. Luck ran out next ball though, another skied shot safely held this time. Steve continued the good fight, but with his dismissal late in the day, any chance of an unlikely win vanished and the only hope was to play out time and trust that bad light would bring about a premature end to the day, thereby leaving us with three undeserved points. Even this slim hope proved baseless as we were bowled out in the fortieth over. (The Firsts are now last on the ladder.)

Seconds: Reds 63 & 7-64 d Burnley 60 & 105

Burnley turned up two short and we ran through them a second time, dismissing them just after tea with the Dart Doctor taking three and the other wickets shared among the usual suspects. We started our chase for 103 confidently, going to 0-24 in quick time. Then came the inevitable, a few wickets turning into a full blown collapse in the 40s, and at 7-47 we shut up shop to avoid an embarrassing outright. Radio Roberts and Ricky Bickle batted out the last eleven overs, Ricky exchanging a few pleasantries as we left the field. Then the umpires announced it wasn't 6.00pm yet and called us back for another 9 minutes. No harm done except to Ricky's karma and eardrums. (The Seconds are now in 4th place.)

Thirds: Ajax 199 & 2-59 d Reds 162

A determined chase went reasonably close against a good Ajax side (so good in fact that they had an ex-Test player as their 12th man!) We looked OK just after tea at 3-110, with Paul Osborne (52) driving strongly and putting together useful partnerships with Calypso (18) and Wim (15). Three quick wickets sent us reeling to 6-123, but then Kieran Macfarlane (27) and Darren Trotter (9) batted and ran very enterprisingly, and at 6-162 it was game on. Even the ex-Test player, Julien Wiener, was feeling the pressure, dropping the F-word in front of the pavilion as his throw failed to prevent an extra run. Then Wiener junior bowled Darren with his nagging offies, their quick man Hyams skittled Kieran and Paulie, and with a player short we were all out and ordered back into the field for Ajax to get some meaningless batting practice and percentage. Must remember we owe them one for that..... (The Thirds are now in 5th place.)

U14A: Kensington-Reds 108 v Aberfeldie 2-3

Scoring runs and losing wickets freely, we crashed to 8-49 with only Tom Ward (18) putting up any sustained resistance. Then Shea Tierney (25*) led a terrific tailend fightback, taking the score to 77 with Cassie Brock (8) and then adding an invaluable 31 for the last wicket with Harry Valentine (12). Tom Ward put us firmly on top by the end of the day, snaring two wickets to have Aberfeldie reeling at 2-3.

U14E: Kensington-Reds 66 v Aberfeldie 0-14

In a tight day's cricket on a slow Straw Field #2, the U14E's grafted their way to 66 in 41 overs. Everyone showed a much improved approach to keeping out the good ball, with Lachlan McLean batting very sensibly to make 10. Some careless shots at the loose balls cost us unnecessary wickets and we slumped to be 7-35, but Ben O'Sullivan (10) and Kalen Hosken (11) rescued the side and Patrick Joyce hit a lovely four past square leg first ball. Aberfeldie have started well to be 0-14 in reply.
